"I get you" would be used to mean "I understand you," no?

"I got you" is just a really colloquial expression which is shorter for "I've got you covered."

Of course, there are probably other uses that I haven't mentioned, but I'm wondering why you downplayed "I get you."

They are more slang terms. I get you means I understand you. I got you means I got your back or I'll support you no matter what happens.

Between friends
A. Make sure you get my paper to me by the end of the day.
B. Got it.

Again between friends
A. Make sure you buy her present. It's her birthday tomorrow and you haven't done anything.
