The nostalgia of a pinewood derby, with a pint (2025)

WESTFIELD — For adults who want to feel the excitement of one of Scouting’s iconic traditions — the Pinewood Derby — the Western Massachusetts Council of Scouting is hosting a “Pint-Wood Derby” at Bright Ideas Brewing Thursday, April 25.

“For those who enjoyed this event in the past this will bring back the nostalgia of the traditional Pinewood Derby,” said Alexa Piscitello, the development director for the council, about the fundraising event for local Scouting programs.

And like a traditional derby, it will feature handcrafted cars, designed and built by local enthusiasts and supporters, but unlike tradition, there will be beer and food. Doors at Bright Ideas Brewing open at 5 p.m., and racing starts at 6 p.m.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring the Pint-Wood Derby to the Westfield community,” said event Chair Dave MacWilliams. “This is a great opportunity for supporters to have some fun while making a meaningful impact on youth development and the Scouting program in our area.”

But for those who attend, bringing an already completed car isn’t necessary.

Piscitello said there will be completed cars available to borrow, and for those who want to relive the memory of building a derby car, kits will be available for $10 at Bright Ideas Brewery that night at a station that will have everything one might need to put it together, including paint.

Kits can also be purchased at the Scouting Council headquarters at 1 Arch Rd., Suite 5, Westfield (the office is next to Monty’s Motorsports) or at Bright Ideas Brewing, which is located at 109 Apremont Way, Westfield.

Those who participate are encouraged to get creative with their car designs, she said.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are available for $50 and $40 for members of the Scouting family, which are parents of Scouts, alumni, and members of the Council, Piscitello said.

Each ticket is entitled to two of Bright Ideas Brewing’s 20 handcrafted beers and a well-stocked charcuterie tray, she said.

This is not the first time this unique fundraiser has been held.

Piscitello said the Council hosted one at a Springfield brewery and “we had a great turnout and lots of fun.”

Proceeds from the event will support Scouting America — Western Massachusetts Council’s mission to provide life-changing programs and outdoor adventures for local youth. Funds raised will help ensure continued access to local Scouting programs, leadership development opportunities, and community involvement initiatives throughout the region.

As one of the nation’s largest youth development organizations, the BSA has served young men and women for more than 100 years. The mission of the BSA — now Scouting America — and the Western Massachusetts council is to inspire young people to make ethical and moral choices, become self-reliant, and take a prominent role in civic engagement over their lifetimes.
