What to Know

Critics Consensus

Disney's take on the Victor Hugo classic is dramatically uneven, but its strong visuals, dark themes, and message of tolerance make for a more-sophisticated-than-average children's film.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal You're quickly won over by the movie's subversive wit, swept along by its narrative bravado and its enormous visual energy. This new "Hunchback" is a triumph on its own terms, and on any other terms that might come to mind. The entire film, however, fails to land with a distracted and ineffective voice. TROY S The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the best Disney animated feature since Beauty and the Beast--a whirling, uplifting, thrilling story with a heart-touching Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Anthony C I’ve started watching “The Hunchback Of Notre Dame” more recently since 2020 when I started using Disney+, & I totally understand why it’s not the most popular Disney movie ever. However, as someone who grew up in a Christian household, I will give “The Hunchback Of Notre Dame” credit for being the only Disney movie to tackle the dark side of religion in the most serious manner the way they did back in 1996. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Leovanni E Great Disney Movie With Arguably The Best Disney Villain Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review ollie P This movie, despite its darkness, is beautiful with its music, colours, and story. It is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I adore esmerelda Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Giani C Amazing movie! Definitely recommend watching. One of my new favorites! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Tina S It's bold but not perfect. Frollo is one the most endearing characters in Disney's runtime for his mature themes and exuberant take on the church's corruption, one of the main contributions why this movie leaves a good taste on many. The Hellfire song sent shivers, genius rendition to Frollo's character. Though despite such a strong installment of an antagonist, the other characters fall weak. They all propose a basic understanding of a general "all is equal" but the way they go about it leaves me perplexed. It was as if they weren't sure how to stick the Esmerelda and Quasimodo narrative just right so they decided to scrap it all together and add a forgettable addition. The judgement of Quasimodo's character seems inconsistent as well, shearing empathy of a kind the next but then seems to bare envy the next. The story's pacing is solid though, immersed me in the story just enough. However, the songs are just immaculate, have I mentioned 'Hellfire'? Oh I think I did! It's great that others are talking about this movie again, quite an underrated gem. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
