A Talmudic Discovery in Shandong Province, China: A Tale of Unexpected Connections

In my role as a Shliach in China, I frequently visit factories producing kosher food for export, ensuring that the products meet halachic standards. These visits are crucial for representing various kosher certifying agencies and supporting factories in maintaining full kosher compliance. Today, my routine inspection took an unexpected turn, revealing a profound connection.
I visited four factories, each with its unique atmosphere and story. As I meticulously checked production lines, ingredients, equipment, and records, a surprise awaited me at the fourth factory.
The factory itself was unremarkable, clean, organized, and efficient, typical of China's well-managed industrial facilities. The surprise came from the factory's representative, responsible for kosher certification, who left a lasting impression.
From the moment I arrived, I sensed his reverence, a blend of professionalism and quiet awe. I later learned he had recently joined this department, explaining our previous lack of interaction. After completing my inspection, he approached me with excitement, inviting me to see something.
He led me to a small closet, carefully opened it, and revealed two Chinese books: 'Talmud Bavli' and 'The Book of Wisdom,' compiled by a Chinese scholar, Qiuquan. He proudly explained that these books are his source of wisdom and inspiration.
The books, though not citing references, were captivating. Each page showcased deep admiration for Jewish learning, moral reasoning, and life lessons from ancient texts. I asked him to share a favorite story, and he eagerly turned to a passage from the Midrash, not the Talmud, about Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel.
The story, told by a Chinese factory manager in remote Shandong, was both simple and profound. It emphasized the power of words, their ability to heal or wound, uplift or destroy. What amazed me was not just the wisdom but the source: a passionate Chinese student of our ancient literature.
Standing thousands of miles from home, I felt a connection beyond language and culture. This man found personal meaning in our ancestors' teachings, shaping Jewish thought for over two millennia. Inspiration can come from unexpected places, and today, it came from a Chinese gentleman in Shandong, deeply engaged with our ancient texts.
Encounters like these remind us that wisdom's light travels far, touching hearts in ways we can't fathom. It's a testament to the enduring impact of our ancient teachings and the power of personal connection across borders.
