Syracuse basketball updates Donnie Freeman’s status, Bryce Zephir’s injury
The Syracuse Orange basketball team faced a challenging game against No. 13 Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge, but emerged victorious with a score of 62-60. However, the team was without its star player, Donnie Freeman, who missed his fourth consecutive game due to a right leg injury. Freeman's injury has been a concern since the Players Era tournament, where he missed all three games in Las Vegas.
Despite the injury, Freeman's recovery is expected to be relatively quick. Adrian Autry provided an update on Freeman's condition, stating that it's likely a day-to-day situation. Autry assured fans that Freeman is progressing and feeling better, with the hope of having him back soon.
Freeman's injury is unrelated to a previous fracture in his right foot, which ended his freshman season. Interestingly, he attended the game in the JMA Wireless Dome, standing and clapping from the team bench, displaying no visible signs of discomfort. This recovery pace is a positive sign for the team and fans alike.
Freeman, a 6-foot-9 forward, leads Syracuse in scoring with impressive averages of 17.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.3 blocks per game. His absence has been felt, as he was the top scorer through the first four games.
The team has some time to recover, with a nine-day break between games. Syracuse will return to action on Dec. 11 against Saint Joseph's, and they have five non-conference games remaining before the start of conference play on Dec. 31 against Clemson.
Another player who missed the game was reserve Bryce Zephir, a 6-foot-4 guard. Zephir, who had played in all seven of Syracuse's games prior to the Tennessee match, is expected to return for the next game against St. Joe's. Autry attributed Zephir's absence to a minor hamstring pull, but assured fans that he will be back soon.
Zephir, a strong and physical guard, is a valuable defensive asset for Syracuse. With six years of college basketball experience, he grew up a fan of the Syracuse program and averages 1.3 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 7.6 minutes per game, shooting 57.1% from the floor. His return will be a boost for the team's defensive efforts.
