Sugar Ray is going to fly into Pierogi Fest this summer.
The annual festival in downtown Whiting that celebrates the Region's Polish heritage and Eastern European cuisine brought in Smash Mouth last year, and is now planning to bring in a big name musical act to headline with a free concert every year, organizer Tom Dabertin said.
"We had a massive show last year. It was shoulder-to-shoulder," he said. "This should draw more people, but it's also something festival goers are looking for."
Pierogi Fest hosts more than 50 musical acts on six performance stages, including many polka, acoustic and tribute bands. It also will feature 55 food booths selling pierogi, halupki, golabki and other Polish fare, as well as two beer gardens and55 arts and crafts and tchotchke vendors.
Sugar Ray will play a free concert on the main stage at 8:30 p.m. July 27. Expect to hear hits like "Fly," "When It’s Over," "Every Morning," "Someday" and "Into Yesterday."

Formed in Newport Beach, California, in 1986, the band started out playing funk metal and nu metal but evolved into a more pop sound. It had a No. 1 hit in 1997 with the bouncy ska- and reggae-tinged song "Fly," which catapulted the band into mainstream success.
Sugar Ray is helmed by frontman Mark McGrath, who also has found success on television as a host of shows like "Extra," "Killer Karaoke" and "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" He was named "sexiest rocker of the year" by People magazine and has appeared on the cover of magazines like Spin and Rolling Stone.
Sugar Ray has continued to tour and perform live, including a recent free New Year's Eve show at Hard Rock Casino.
Pierogi Fest will take place between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. on July 26 and July 27, and between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on July 28.
