Student email and collaboration tools | UWA Library | UWA (2024)

UWA Login (Uni-ID & Pheme)

The University has two primary login formats it uses, the older "Pheme" account which is simply your student number, and the newer Uni-ID (which will eventually replace Pheme accounts) which is in the format of [emailprotected]. Your password will be initially set when you activate in Pheme.

Email addresses

Your email address will be in the format of: [emailprotected]. By default, the display name of your email will display to all students and staff as your firstname & lastname followed by your student number in brackets, e.g. "Sam Citizen (12345678)".

If you are a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) student undertaking any of the following degrees you are eligible to activate a UWA research email alias:

  • PhD
  • Professional doctorate
  • Master’s by thesis
  • Master’s by thesis and coursework

You’ll retain your existing student email account, and any email addressed to the UWA research email alias will simply be delivered to your existing student email account. Official UWA notification email messages will continue to be delivered to your inbox.

The default format of a UWA research e-mail alias is [emailprotected], although we offer several choices based on a combination of your first name, preferred first name, middle initial and last name. The display name of your email will display to all students and staff simply as your chosen name, and your title will have "Research (Student number)" when looked for.

More information about UWA research email aliases is available here.

Leaving UWA or deferring your studies

Your access to student email is affected if you leave the University or defer your enrolment, and after you complete your course.

  • Deferred: You will retain access until you can no longer legally enrol in that course.
  • Approved leave: You can retain access while not studying for a maximum of three years.
  • Withdrawing: You will lose access within 28 days from the end of your enrolment.
  • Cancelled course: You will lose access within 28 days from the course termination.
  • Lapsed enrolments: You will lose access within 28 days from the end of your enrolment.
  • Completed course: You will lose access 12 months from when you complete your course. Note: this is not the day you pass your exams, or your graduation day, but the day where your course status is recorded as completed. This means you will not be able to access your UWA student email account or collaboration tools after this time and access cannot be restored.

If you wish to keep a copy of your emails and files, you will need to organise this before your access expires.

You may wish to notify your contacts that you will no longer be contactable on your UWA email address before your access expires. Consider either:

  • composing an email to your contacts letting them know of an alternative email address
  • setting up an 'Out of office' response with your new contact details – instructions on doing this are available

Note: the out-of-office response will cease working once your access expires.

Student email device configuration settings

The University supports most mainstream devices to access your email. By default, you can access your email from any browser by visiting Student webmail. A range of online configuration guidesfor other apps is also available for your personal devices.
