    This entry level Personnel Security Specialist position is with the Office of Profession Responsibility (OPR), Security Operations Directorate, Personnel Security Division located in Washington D.C.; OPR is a component of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Use your experience or education to qualify for this opportunity, where you will determine the suitability and security eligibility of individuals entering or already working in sensitive and non-sensitive positions within CBP. 

    In this position you will serve a Security Specialist identifying and protecting information, personnel, property, facilities, operations, or material from unauthorized disclosure, misuse, theft, assault, vandalism, espionage, sabotage or loss.

    Your duties and responsibilities will include:

    • Providing training in the analytic and judgmental aspects of the work and in the appropriate use of proper methods and techniques.

    • Reviewing, evaluating, and adjudicating submitted investigation packages to ensure compliance and adequacy of the package.

    • Reviewing completed investigations for compliance and adequacy, requesting investigations from other federal entities, and creating and/or documenting all actions within designated systems of records.

    • Reviewing submitted documentation, reports of investigation, investigative materials and database checks. Incumbent uses a variety of complex information technology systems (e.g., ISMS, PIPS, e-QIP, CVS).

    Salary and Benefits

    This position starts at a salary of $68,405.00 (GS-07, Step 1) to $88,926.00 (GS-09, Step 10) with promotion potential to $128,956.00 (GS-12, Step 10).     Qualifications

    Note, this position will be filled at either the GS-7 or GS-9 grade level, depending upon the level of qualifications of the applicants.

    You qualify for the GS-07 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

    • Reviewing requests for personnel security clearances when derogatory information is absent.

    • Assisting in scheduling security investigations.

    • Reviewing reports of personnel background investigation to identify the presence or absence of derogatory information.

    Education Substitution for the GS-7 grade level: Graduate Education. Successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR A bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may also substitute for the experience required at the GS-7 grade level. It is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average (i.e., GPA 3.0 or higher of a possible 4.0, excluding pass/fail credits. Pass/fail credits cannot be more than 10% of total credits), or (3) honor society membership.

    You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

    • Reviewing and evaluating reports of investigations or other data to determine if individuals meet security standards.

    • Issuing personnel ID cards and building keys.

    • Determining eligibility for access to classified or sensitive information in the presence of derogatory information.

    Education Substitution for the GS-9 grade level: Successful completion of two or more years of full-time graduate education or a master’s (or higher) degree from an accredited college or university or an LL.B. or J.D that demonstrates the skills necessary to do the work.

    Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified.
