The first to decommit was Kemon Spell, a four-star recruit and the top-ranked running back in the 2027 cycle, according to ESPN. He was also ranked No. 15 overall in the ESPN Junior 300. Following Spell's decision, Layton Von Brandt (No. 35 overall) and Gabriel Jenkins (No. 242) also decommitted from the 2027 class. Adding to the losses, Khalil Taylor (No. 66 overall) decommitted on Friday. This means that the once-promising 2027 class is now completely empty.
For the 2026 class, ranked 17th nationally at the time, Lavar Keys was the only prospect to decommit. The program is now vulnerable, with the early signing period just two months away in December.
Several high-profile commits from the ESPN 300, including wide receiver Davion Brown (No. 71 overall), offensive tackle Kevin Brown (No. 80), and running back Messiah Mickens (No. 135), along with quarterback Troy Huhn (No. 186), could potentially reconsider their commitments. Penn State's athletic director, Patrick Kraft, stated that the change in leadership was made to help the program compete for Big Ten and national championships.
Under Franklin, the Nittany Lions consistently recruited among the top programs in the Big Ten, with their highest-ranked class being No. 4 nationally in 2018. That year, they signed five-star players like Micah Parsons and Justin Shorter. In the last four cycles, the program has consistently been in the top 15 of ESPN's recruiting rankings. Current players such as Drew Allar, Kaytron Allen, and Nicholas Singleton were among the top recruits during this period.
