HFB & WaterQuip: Providing Clean Water to St. Joseph's School, Uganda (2025)

Imagine a school where children struggle to access something as basic as clean water. It’s a harsh reality for many in Uganda, where preventable diseases like typhoid and malaria thrive due to unsafe drinking water. But here’s where hope steps in. Housing Finance Bank (HFB) and WaterQuip Uganda Limited have joined forces to transform this grim scenario at St. Joseph’s Nursery and Primary School in Nansana. Together, they’ve installed a state-of-the-art water purification system, ensuring over 900 students and staff have reliable access to safe drinking water. This initiative is part of HFB’s broader Water Supply and Sanitation Solution, a program dedicated to creating healthier learning environments across Uganda. And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just about water—it’s about empowering communities and reducing health risks that keep children out of school. The system can store up to 600 liters of clean water, even during power outages, a game-changer for consistency. At the commissioning event, Doreen Nyiramugisha, HFB’s Head of Marketing and Communications, passionately reiterated the bank’s commitment to sustainability and community development. She stressed that this project is a testament to HFB’s mission to improve lives and foster thriving communities. But here’s where it gets controversial: while access to clean water is a fundamental human right, as WaterQuip Uganda CEO Adrine Atumanya rightly pointed out, not everyone agrees on how to achieve it. Should corporations lead the charge, or is it the government’s responsibility? This partnership is a step toward Uganda’s Sustainable Development Goal 6, but it also raises questions about scalability and long-term funding. What do you think? Is corporate intervention enough, or does systemic change need to come from the top? Let’s spark a conversation in the comments—your perspective matters!
