Imagine this: You're out and about, and desperately need to reach your family at home. Suddenly, a convenient lifeline you've always relied on vanishes. That's precisely what's happened with Google's recent update to the Google Home app.
Google has quietly removed the 'Call Home' feature, a tool that made it incredibly easy to connect with household members via their smart displays. This feature, introduced back in 2019, was a game-changer, allowing direct calls to devices like the Nest Hub and Pixel Tablet without the need for each family member to have their own device or account. It was simple: a button in the Home app, and you were connected.
But here's where it gets controversial... Google hasn't officially explained why they've ditched this user-friendly feature. The removal seems to have occurred recently, with reports surfacing on platforms like Reddit and first noted by PiunikaWeb. Even Google's own support staff seemed unaware of the change when initially contacted by users.
One Reddit user shared a common scenario: they used 'Call Home' to speak with their children while running errands. Now, without personal devices for the kids, this crucial line of communication is gone.
And this is the part most people miss... While you can still call a smart display using Google Meet, it's a more complex process. It requires adding an account to Google Meet on the display, which isn't always feasible, especially for younger family members. In addition to the 'Call Home' feature, research by 9to5Google indicates the 'Broadcast' button has also disappeared from the Home app. This button allowed you to send messages to be read aloud on your home's speakers and smart displays. While the broadcast functionality remains accessible through voice commands, the removal of these features suggests a shift in how Google envisions user interaction with its smart home ecosystem.
